Toilet Training
We recognize that each child is an individual. Children are ready for toilet training at different ages and stages. We will begin to toilet train when the parent and teacher confer and feel the child is ready. We recognize the following physical and emotional signs of readiness. A child may be ready for toilet training when he/she:
- Remains dry for at least two hours at a time during the day or is dry after nap
- Has predictable and regular bowel movements
- Indicates by words, facial expression or posture that he/she is about to urinate or have a bowel movement
- Can pull pants on and off with little help
- Can walk to and from the bathroom
- Displays discomfort with soiled diapers and wants to be changed
- Asks to wear underwear
- Is able to follow simple, verbal instructions
We will slowly begin toilet training as follows:
- The teacher will show the child where the toilet is located
- The teacher will show the child training pants or pull ups, and how to pull them up and down
- The teacher will take the child to the bathroom on a regular consistent schedule
The teacher will praise success and treat "accidents" with understanding.
